Depending on the type of information you need, you will first want to pay a visit to one of the following: the William A. Ross, Jr., Historical Center, Shelby County Courthouse, Health Department, or the Amos Memorial Public Library. All of these places have reference material for your use.


Amos Memorial Public Library
The library’s Genealogy section has an extensive collection of materials to help you research the family tree. The library is located at North and Miami streets in Sidney, two blocks from the Courthouse. Closed on some holidays. Its hours are: Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Closed Sundays June through August).

Books--U.S. and state collections of genealogical and historical books as well as a general Ohio collection and Ohio county collections. Especially large book sections on Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky. Special sections for genealogy guides, churches, heraldry, family, military, and European country genealogical books. Large Shelby County book collection includes Marriage Records of Shelby County, Ohio 1819-1899; Sutton’s History of Shelby County, Ohio; Memorial Records of Shelby County, Ohio, 1819-1975 (burials in Shelby County cemeteries); and Shelbyana, the newsletter of the Shelby County Genealogical Society (Oct. 1979 to present). Ohio collection also includes Indexes of the Ohio Censuses of 1820-60 and 1880.

Unpublished manuscripts--Two large file cabinets containing many manuscripts on families, churches, cemeteries, and other subjects.

Microfilm/fiche--The library has several microfilm/fiche readers with copiers. Library staff can assist patrons in operating these machines. The micro collection includes the following records.

From the Census: U.S. Federal Census for 1790 and 1810. Census for all Ohio counties for 1820 to 1900 (a few Indiana counties included). Shelby County and surrounding counties for 1910 and 1920. Census of Cherokee Indians for 1835.

From the Probate Court: Case files for 1819 to 1887, birth and death records for 1867 to 1904, will books for 1825 to 1902, marriages for 1825 to 1904, and some estate files and other miscellaneous information including jail registers for 1879 to 1906 and Civil War soldiers’ discharge records.

Shelby County newspapers: Western Herald and Republican Herald for 1831 to 1836; Sidney Journal for 1863 to 1909; Shelby County Democrat for 1869 to 1873 and 1876 to 1940; Valley Sentinel for 1881 to 1886; Sidney Journal Gazette for 1905 to 1909; Sidney Daily Journal for 1914 to 1916; Weekly Republican for 1909 to 1913; and Sidney Daily News for 1891 to within 2 months of current date (ask librarian for more current paper copies).

From the Ohio Historical Society: Various topics and counties, including Shelby County Children’s Home occupant records, county home inmates, clerk of courts minutes for 1819 to 1841, and Miami County marriage records for 1807 to 1866 (copy of list available by sending self-addressed, stamped envelope to Misc.
