IT'S HISTORY
JUST FOR KIDS consists of information plans designed to assist K through 12th grade
teachers in developing a local history curriculum for the classroom. Teachers can choose
the specific historical themes which are most appropriate for their students. The goals and objectives are that all materials serve as a
classroom resource and enhance a social studies or language arts curriculum, meet the
needs of students at different developmental levels, address a variety of learning styles
while providing Shelby County specific materials. These materials introduce hands-on
activities that will engage students in the study of their own history, inspire student
collaboration and group work and also address the Ohio Proficiency Test requirements.
The use of Shelby County specific materials will increase
students knowledge of their community, provide a basis from which to study other
cultures and societies past and present, encourage the use of local resources in
curriculum development. The people introduced through this web site are real people. Many
types of historical records have been used to reconstruct their lives and where possible,
their own words have been used to describe their situation. In some cases, the details are
not completely known, but are based on current historical understanding.
The education resources provided are: historical
narratives, images of objects, timelines, maps and research tools relating to the social
sciences activities. Additional supplemental materials available to teachers include
slides, videos, photographs, field trips, living history presentations, and an array of
historical documents.
The key concept for all the Societys materials,
including its web site is to provide a quality learning resource that is accessible,
user-friendly and fun for all ages.
