I.H. Thedieck

Ignatius H. Thedieck (at right) was born in Alfhousen, Germany, in 1855. He arrived in America when he was sixteen, and had moved to Sidney by the time he was twenty.

Mr. Thedieck was principally a retailer. For over half a century he owned and operated Thedieck's Department Store, which was located next to the alley on Poplar Street north of the courthouse. His activities in business development, however, made a larger impact on Sidney.

When Monarch Machine Tool Company was formed, Mr. Thedieck was the organizing force behind it, and served as its first president. He also was involved in the formation and operation of the Sidney Machine Tool Company, the Whipp Machine Tool Company, Anderson Body Company, and the First National Exchange Bank. When he died in 1926, the editor of "The Sidney Daily News" commented in his obituary: "He highly graced and honored this community. Through his activities he did more in a sound, creative way than any other man to here build an industrial community, which, without his efforts, would not have existed."
